As they attempt to enjoy a nice lunch at one of Maria Bay’s small cafés, Daniel and Laura realize from some of the uncomfortable reactions by other dining guests to his presence there, that many of the citizens of the town may connect him to the deaths that have been occurring, and that they may resent that he may be the rightful heir to the O’Bannon estate. The owner of the café, fearing that he will lose business because of Daniel’s presence, tells Daniel and Laura that he cannot serve them. Daniel explodes in a fit of rage and lashes out at the whole crowd while Laura calmly encourages him to leave.

After picking up food from a drive-through, Daniel convinces Laura to have a picnic at the mansion, which he says lawyers have assured him is now his even though the official papers have yet to be signed. Daniel says that he hopes he might find some evidence of who is really responsible for the violent deaths plaguing their town. Since he has not yet received keys to the house, he breaks in, and he and Laura investigate the library where Sidney Johnson recently died before turning their attention to the upstairs bedrooms.

Daniel and Laura become separated from each other as they investigate the seven rooms in the east wing. They separately witness terrifying scenes with living and dead residents from the past and present. The experiences they have defy any ordinary sense of time and place, and they culminate in one room at the end of the hall where Daniel and Laura, finally reunited, open the door to see a path leading through woods to the toy factory. Harold O’Bannon marches down toward them with time-defying steps that seem to be moving him through another dimension. Daniel stares entranced, while Laura slams the door just before O’Bannon crosses the threshold to enter into their world.
